Therapeutic Listening Program

How Does the Therapeutic Listening Program Help Children?

This program is used to treat children who have difficulties with movement, auditory processing, perception, language and/or sensory processing. Through extensive national and international research, a common denominator was discovered among these varying conditions: problems in processing sound. To address this deficiency, therapeutic listening was developed to train the auditory system and thereby enhance listening skills, remediate auditory perceptual problems and produce significant results in a relatively short period of time among children with disabilities.

Having children listen to specifically modulated and filtered music on compact disks through headphones that provides a balanced and full range of sound frequencies, this program has demonstrated the ability to increase our capacity to treat a growing population of children who have developmental delays, sensory processing disorders, ADD/ADHD, Down syndrome, autism, poor balance and/or communication delays.

Pathways to Learning Project Rehabilitation Therapy

The Pathways to Learning Project is for rehabilitation therapy and is used to teach children with disabilities how to ride a bike.

For most children, learning to ride a bike is a rite of passage. For children with disabilities and/or developmental delays, learning to ride a bike is a very challenging endeavor. Less than 20% of children with autism and 10% of children with Down Syndrome learn to ride a bike.

Ways to support this project:

Donations – Donations will be used to fund themed outbuildings such as gas station, grocery store and school, which will be placed along the bike pathways. Also, in an effort to create an inviting and realistic setting, additional structural enhancements such as park benches, child-size street signs, trees and plants are planned. Donations will be used to purchase these items along with various bicycles and other wheeled apparatuses, including specially designed bicycles and trikes.

Interactive Metronome Treatment

Each person has varying abilities to perform tasks requiring timing, planning and sequencing. Research has shown that those abilities form the foundation of many other human abilities such as: motor planning and performance; concentration and focus; control of aggression and hyperactivity, and cognitive planning and processing. Therefore, they also have a significant impact on academic achievement in speech, language, reading and mathematics. Further research and experience have shown that these fundamental capacities can be trained and improved upon, which in turn, may improve higher functional capacities. The goal of Interactive Metronome (IM) treatment is to bring about lasting improvements in an individual’s fundamental informational processing, planning and sequencing, and attention capacities. Individual goals of IM treatment will vary from person to person based upon individual needs and functional goals.
